Potty Training

Below you will find potty training tips that are given to all of our new puppy parents to help them transition the puppy outdoors with fewer mistakes in your home.

Right now, all the puppies are pellet trained. I us a little litter box that is a bin, it is very low to the ground just like a cat litter box and I fill it with natural wood pine pellets, not shavings.

You can get these pellets at any local feed store like Tractor Supply or Royal King. I put this in their little playpen that goes around the litter box with their toys, feed, water, and blanket.

Every so often about every 30-45 minutes or so, we put them back in there to go potty where they naturally to go. I also utilize the space when I am alone with all the puppies and are very busy around the house like cooking dinner or cleaning.  They normally love their playpen. It is full of toys and know that their potty bin is in there so it is never a problem.

If you follow the same routine, they know exactly what you’re doing as soon as they get to their new home. We are also working on crate training as you have read in previous messages so whether you would like to follow these routines are completely up to you. For the most part, for everybody who follows the directions I give, the transition is easy-going. They really love their playpen area. It is a place for them to unwind and relax and it is their safe place.

They don’t much like their crate at night time for sleeping right now but again, it keeps them nice and safe. I love crate training because we cannot always be around our loving animals every minute of every day and when they are puppies, they’re curious and like to chew along with getting into things they’re not supposed to. Crate training/playpen ensures that our babies, when we leave the home are in a safe zone where they cannot get hurt and ends up being one of their safe spaces as they get older. If you would like to transition to outside grass, that is wonderful.

💩You can also do grass training coming home along with the pellet training until you feel confident that they really understand outside training and peeing in the grass. Grass training is completely safe if you ARE NOT in a subdivision or community where other dogs and animals are crossing your path…

If this is the case, PLEASE continue with pellet training until they are fully vaccinated. If you have your own private yard, you can start grass training as soon as you would like.

It can take some Doxies a while to potty train so the pellets really help save a lot of mommy and daddy sanity until they get about 6 months to a year old and really understand their routines
